四、讲座简介
The question in the title is prompted by our failure to deal with the climate and environmental crises. This inturn derives in part from a dubious but widespread idea of who we are as human beings: that we arebasically free and independent individuals in economic competition with others for all the satisfactions thatlate capitalism has to offer, In recent times the libertarian Titans of Big Tech have added a strong dose ofCartesian mind-body dualism to the formula, with aspirations to rise above all the damage they're doing.More beneficial ideas of who we are can be found in most indigenous traditions - but especially in Chinesephilosophy, which understands human beings as relatives in a dynamic network of interactions with ourfellow humans, the biosphere, and the powers of Heaven and Earth, Together with corresponding views inour own philosophical tradition, these ideas provide good grounds for a dialogue with China aboutcooperating to resolve our environmental predicament, There are still many obstacles in the way of dealingwith the environmental crisis, which we need to be aware of if we are to have any chance of turning things around.
